Judy Johansen means it when she says she is Always "Hair" For You.
Johansen operates her home-based wig and hairpiece business in Blackfalds 365 days a year with her husband, Karl.
Johansen takes weekend and evening appointments, even if they fall on a holiday, to cater to her client's needs. Her husband does all the bookkeeping, taxes and Web design for the business.
Johansen opened her business, Always Hair For You, in spring 2010 after she experienced the loss of her own hair and was frustrated with the lack of quality wigs available for good prices.
"I've seen a huge need for people to have a choice at a good price," she said.
Although Johansen started out slowly as she built her clientele, things picked up last year, and running the business has been very rewarding, not just on the business side, but personally as well.
"2011 proved to be successful, overwhelming and rewarding to see the difference our wigs make to anyone needing or wanting a wig for health reasons or for fashion," she said.
'Bring people back to life': Johansen
Johansen pointed out there is nothing like fitting someone with the perfect wig, as you "bring back life to people who feel down every time they look in their mirror."
Always Hair For You supplies ladies of all ages with wigs, hats and turbans as well as hair pieces for dance and cheer groups.
About half of her clients purchase wigs for health reasons, but there is also a burgeoning demand for wigs for fashion.
"Wigs can become addictive and once you start wearing them, it is unlikely that you will stop," she said.
"For one thing, it only takes a few minutes to get ready for any occasion."
When she started her business, Johansen's main goals were to provide a variety of quality wigs at low prices, and she has done that now, with more than 400 wigs in stock, for almost half the price of other retailers.
One of the ways she keeps prices down is by running her business from home, rather than renting a space, which would make her prices skyrocket.
Running her business from home also allows her a relaxing, tension-free experience.
Johansens' African Grey parrot also puts visitors at ease by speaking to them from his cage in the other room as they try on wigs.
On occasion, clients may hear him squawk, "What do we sell? Hair! Hair!" or tell them how pretty they look in a wig.
Customers given
one-on-one
treatment
Johansen believes strongly in ensuring every customer gets the one-on-one time they need.
"If they need two hours, they get two hours; if they need three hours, they get three," she said.
"The success to any business, in our opinion and experience, is to listen to what people want, give great service and never be in a hurry."
